Sehrish Amin Khan, Ahmad Usman, and Mehwish Javed from the University of the Punjab’s Institute of Administrative Sciences and Institute of Business Administration collaborated to investigate the critical link between ethical leadership, knowledge sharing, and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among academicians in public and private higher education institutions in Pakistan.

Recognising the importance of OCB in the academic world, this study intended to fill a vacuum in previous research by investigating how ethical leadership promotes educators’ citizenship behaviour, with knowledge sharing acting as a moderator. OCB, which is defined as behaviours conducted outside of regular job obligations, is critical in the context of higher education institutes.

The researchers collected data from 316 academicians from public and private universities in Pakistan using correlation and regression analysis. The findings demonstrated a link between ethical leadership and organizational citizenship behaviour. Furthermore, information sharing showed a beneficial link with employees’ OCB. According to the regression analysis, information sharing worked as a partial mediator between ethical leadership and organizational citizenship behaviour.

This study contributes significantly to the literature on leadership by emphasizing the relevance of ethical leadership in encouraging citizenship behaviour among academicians. The findings imply that university leaders, particularly in Pakistan’s heterogeneous higher education landscape, should priorities and practice ethical leadership as a means of cultivating an organizational civic culture.

Finally, this study gives useful insights for academic leaders by advocating ethical leadership practices as a strategic way to improving employees’ citizenship behaviour in higher education institutions.
